Computer Aided Design (CAD)

What Is Computer Aided Design (CAD)?

Computer Aided Design, referred to as CAD is the use of a computer-based software that aids in the design process. CAD software is commonly used by different types of engineers and designs to create two-dimensional (2D) drawings and three-dimensional (3D) models.

There are multiple improvements to be found in utilizing CAD software. Some of these are increased productivity, improved quality, increase in level of detail in the design, ability to verify part integration, and design for manufacturability. The other advantage of CAD is the ability to convert the file directly to a format that can be read by today’s CNC machines.

What software do we use at King’s Ransom Design and Fab?

At King’s Ransom Design and Fab LLC we utilize both Solidworks and AutoCad. The ability to utilizing both of these software, allows for greater flexibility to the customer and their end product.

Can you build a part without CAD?

At King’s Ransom Design and Fab LLC, we have the ability to machine simple parts without CAD. While this is not recommended, it is possible. If you are wanting a 3D printed prototype, or a CNC machine part, a Model developed with CAD software is required. This can be done through multiple methods including creating a design from scratch to 3D scanning an existing part to create a model.
